So a lot of people were asking me to cover some budget category gaming laptops and that is what I've been working on since the past few days so you can expect a lot of laptop post coming up to Back in the next few days, guys, keeping that aside today.
I have an amazing gaming laptop to show you all this nice trumping from Lenovo called the Legion 5 budget gaming laptops in 2021, AMD gaming laptop so it was just launched his gaming laptop just a few days ago in India and I already have it in my studio and I've been testing it for the past few days.
And let me tell you this Legion budget gaming laptops is powered by AMD his newest ryzen 4000 series CPU. It packs GTX 1650 ti graphics card, and also comes with a really high refresh rate panel up to 120 hertz refresh rate.
So today giving my complete review on the product. So without wasting any more time. Let's get started.
Alright guys so the new Legion budget laptops in 2021 AMD edition gaming laptop from Lenovo comes into sort of box packaging, you've got the Legion branding everywhere and some details regarding the product at the back, the model we'll be reviewing today is the Legion 5 budget gaming laptop 15 inch variant, which is powered by AMD ryzen 540 600 CPU and comes in GTX 1650 ti.
So on opening a we've got the laptop at the top bagged in this thermal cold type case, by the way it's available only in one color for now called the Phantom Black Edition. And along with that you get a main scored a 170 watt adapter for charging and some paperwork, make sure to read them for all info. That's it.
Now let's finally check out the laptop. The all new Legion gaming laptops in 2021 from Lenovo, it's a brand new AMD edition laptop powered by the ryzen 4000 series CPU, the one we have right now is the ryzen 5 variant, and here you go.
That looks good, right. It's got a clean and minimalistic design in dark gray finish and looks quite attractive from a first glance, just as any other gaming laptop, it is definitely a bit thick and weighs around 2.8 kgs. So let me give you all a closer look and talk about the build quality.
Build Quality, Connectivity
The chassis of the laptop is entirely made of plastic, but let me tell you, the build quality is solid and very well constructed the lid has a smooth matte finish with the Lenovo branding here and sees Legion, on the other side.
And if you can observe the Legion logo has a nice prismatic finish which shines in rainbow and light falls onto the surface.
There's no RGB lighting anywhere because it's a budget model right in terms of design I don't see a big difference compared to the previous Gen Y 40 series, and also one more thing I have to mention is the body doesn't attract much fingerprints or as much as anywhere. Well, that's a good thing.
Now let me show you all the available connectivity ports on it. On the left, there's an exhaust vent USB 3.2 type a port 3.5 mm audio jack and you'll see these tiny grilles on the lower side. These are the speakers. It's got stereo speakers on the left and right, powered by Harman. That's it.
There is nothing on the front, going to the right, you've got the other speaker grille, a bar indicator recent button USB 3.1 port. And one more exhaust vent.
I love how Lenovo has given attention to tiny things like this Legion logo and the inch, it said on the other side as well.
And going to the backside. You've got two big exhaust vents on the corners, an RJ 45 Ethernet port, a USB 3.2 type C port, two more USB three point a Type A ports HDMI, dc in. And lastly a Kensington log. That's it. These were all the available connectivity ports on it, and here's how the laptop looks from the bottom.
Thermal
The Legion budget gaming laptops features especial thermal cooling system called the coldfriend 2.0 to keep the system running cool, we'll talk about the thermals more during the performance testing part, keeping that aside, it's called rubber foot pads on all the corners and some product info at the center.
Wait a second, I forgot to tell you about the upgradability part, you can easily open up this bottom cover and upgrade both the SSD as well as the base variant comes in only one eight GB DDR 4 ram stay plugged in 3200 megahertz.
Display
All right, now let's open it and have a look at the interiors, you can open the lid with one hand, and there's not much flex as well over here, and this is our the Legion budget gaming laptops in 2021 looks like beautiful right you've got the Legion branding and talking about the display.
It comes with a 15.6 inch 1080 b Full HD IPS display with 120 hertz refresh rate, the bezels also look quite thin on the sides and the top, while the bottom bezel is a big take, going to the top the Legion laptops in 2021 comes with a 720 p webcam.
So Good thing you can even use it to attend your online classes, or even meetings. And the best part is, Lenovo also added an option to close the camera with a sliding shutter mechanism to give you a total privacy control.
I really appreciate that Lenovo. Well, that is about the upper half now moving to the lower half section.
keyboard
Let me just give you a closer look and then talk about the keyboard and the touchpad the Legion budget laptops comes with Lenovo all new true strike keyboard available in both RGB as well as white LED lighting.
We have the white LED variant, the quality of the keyboard is good and feels quite comfortable while typing offers 1.5 mm key travel with soft landing concave shaped keys, Android, that talent key feedback. It supports 100% anti ghosting as well.
But what I really like about it is its large desktop like layout and well space directional arrow keys, makes it very convenient to use it, not to forget the keyboard LED backlight brightness is also adjustable in two steps using the function and the space bar.
Touchpad
Coming to the touchpad. It's got a decent touchpad with the plastic surveys accurately detects all my finger movements and gestures no issues over here, and comes into integrated left and right click buttons.
But instead of that, I would have preferred to have two separate mechanical left and right click buttons below the touchpad.
Multiple Display Variants
let's talk about that is playing the laptop can set multiple display variants, we have a basic variant right now that comes with a 15.6 inch TDP Full HD IPS panel with 120 hertz refresh rate.
But let me tell you if you had to buy this laptop, I would advise you to go with the 144 hertz panel variant, because the 120 hertz model the one I have right now supports only 60% sRGB and 45% NTSC color gamut.
See there's good amount of detail text looks sharp and crisp, but the colors look a bit washed out and not that accurate.
So if you're a normal person who just watches movies casual Netflix series, or your main purposes gaming, then you won't have much complaints.
But if you're a content creator, or a video producer who does a lot of Photoshop color grading, or stuff like that, then you won't be that happy with this panel, get the 144 hertz variant that supports 100% sRGB color gamut. The dynamic range was also fine and offered up to 250 nits of brightness.
But what makes it special for gaming is it supports very high refresh rates of up to 120 hertz, and the response time was also less than five milliseconds.
Audio, Speakers
We'll come to the gaming part in a moment, but before that let me tell you what the speakers, the laptop has to do side firing speakers powered by Harman and also supports Dolby Atmos.
And let me tell you the audio quality is really good. It is producing great sound with minimum distortion and the output also loud and satisfactory.
Performance
So let me tell you about the performance. The model we have right now is powered by ryzen 5 4600H, which is a six core 12 thread CPU with a max turbo boost of up to 4 gigahertz, and coupled with GTX 1650 ti GPU that comes with 4 gigs of RAM.
It's an excellent combo for grade 1080p gaming on a budget, and not just gaming, the laptop is also great for productive works like photo editing and video editing as well you know, mostly CPU intensive tasks.
You can smoothly manage all your work on this laptop, the ryzen 5 4600H headshell great potential, and in multi threaded applications or CPU intensive tasks.
It even outperforms Intel's 10th Gen. I7-10750H sometimes, but again that's only in the productive category, not the gaming section. Keep that in mind.
Gaming Performance
Coming to the gaming section, the gaming performance was also great. I played a couple of Triple-A title games on it at very high graphics angles easily getting an average of around 45 to 48 FPS in titles like Assassin's Creed Odyssey,Tomb Raider and more bringing down the settings to medium offered a smooth 60 FPS experience.
Just check out this GTA 5 game place and get an idea and talking about the thermals, I haven't seen or did a good job on the cooling section, even after gaming for more than 30 minutes in the high performance mode, the CPU are settling around 70 to 75 degrees centigrade and the GPU temperatures was averaging around 55 to 50 degrees centigrade.
Excellent thermal performance phase no sort of heating issues on my particular model and the fan was also minimum guys I had no disturbances, while playing, or even while working.
Battery Life
Talking about the battery life. The Legion budget gaming laptops in 2021 has a force and 60 watt hour battery and the battery life was average just like any other gaming laptop.
On a moderate kind of use, which includes browsing the web, slight text editing watching YouTube videos with the brightness set to 70%. I was getting around like five to five and a half hours of battery life.
Well, That was my post or Lenovo's new Legion budget gaming laptops in 2021 AMD edition gaming laptop. It's a good gaming laptop and offers great performance.
Conclusion
Thanks to the ryzen 4000 series CPU, but the only thing is, as mentioned earlier, the base variants panel quality is not that great.
I would advise you to definitely get the high end panel variant. And lastly, affect the price of the laptop is also on the expensive side, considering the level of specs, it was offering.
I do agree that it's got good thermals and performance, but only if Lenovo could bring down the price.
I'm pretty sure it will be a killer gaming laptop on budget. So what do you guys think about the Legion budget gaming laptops in 2021.
